Summer is here and so is the Summer of War! In this series of articles I’m going to focus on the upcoming releases in the GW2 franchise. This week it’s time to take a look at the upcoming HoT expansion, Heart of Thorns.
Since the beginning of May, the summer has been full of gaming. All of our games have been released, the Steam Summer Sale has been happening for over a month, and it’s now very hard to find a game you have not played. I have mentioned in the past how gaming is one of my favorite pastimes, but how it can also be a hobby quite expensive sometimes.
We look back at the eventful summer of 2015, where Pokemon GO was released, remakes of old Nintendo games were announced, and the beloved Super Smash Bros. suffered a tragedy.
This weekend, Da Summer Waaagh 2 took place in Horwich, England. The Waaagh made a comeback this summer thanks to this event! Mani Cheema’s Orks finished third when his round three opponent showed that Mars makes a superior Red and slowed down his Speed Waaagh.
Information about the Summer Waaagh 2 Tournament:
The following is taken from the tournament’s Mission Pack:
“The first round will be drawn at random, with subsequent rounds decided using a ‘Swiss system.’” The match play rules on page 212 of the main rulebook will be used, together with the extra match play rules from Chapter Approved. All FAQs and Errata will be used, with the exception of the final page of the Designers Commentary on the Warhammer Community website. You may choose your army from datasheets in any codex published before Saturday, August 21, 2024. You may utilize Forgeworld rules, but you must have all applicable rules and FAQs for your FW models. It is not permitted to use the Forgeworld Beta Rules. Armies may employ up to three detachments and must be battle-forged with a maximum of 2000 points. Lords of Waaagh has a reputation for being a fun, pleasant, and accepting environment for all levels of players, and we want to maintain that reputation. As a result, anybody who is being particularly unsportsmanlike or cheating will be asked to leave.
Under no circumstances are fortifications greater than PL 5 permitted at this event.”
The Summer Waaagh 2 Rules are as follows:
“Missions from the New Games Workshop GT Pack, which can be found in the 40k Grand Tournament 2024 book, will be used. For this event, the minimum painting requirement is three colors and based. You are allowed to use unpainted models, but you will not get the 10 painting points each round.”
Winning Lists for the Summer Waaagh Tournament
No one was able to stop Jay Woods Drukhari, who took first place. Congratulations to Matt Charles and his Iron Hands, who came in second place after a grueling 51-47 battle against Admech and kept Admech off the podium. The new Grey Knights were also absent from the podium.
Drukhari is the first-place winning army in the Summer War.
When it came to rerolls for his army, Jay Wood delivered the goods to Da Summer Waaagh 2 with efficiency and a side of unusual efficiency. The raiders’ speed, along with Kabal of the Black Heart and Obsidian Rose, will undoubtedly cause agony. Furthermore, with two Kabal patrols, there are two Trueborn squads.
The many Phantasm Grenade Launchers will aid in the squeezing of those fatal wounds. The third patrol, the Cult of Strife, was formed for quick melee and to halt overwatch for the Incubi and Drazhar if required. That’s how Da Summer Waaagh 2 came to be!

Ironhands 2nd Place Summer Waaagh
With his second-place finish, Matt Charles demonstrated that the flesh is pretty frail. Half of his vanguard vets in both squads are equipped with an additional chainsword instead of a lightning claw to save money on Stormshields. When you need a lot of assaults, this is the way to go.
His mixed devastators teams are another excellent option. Ironhands, thankfully, are exempt from the penalty for moving and firing heavy weapons on the first turn. This goes past the usual disembark restrictions, which specify that a unit cannot stay motionless for more than a few seconds. Even better, both of these units will reroll 1s in order to hit. Two mixed squads of two Multimeltas and two Grav-cannons are poised to strike on 2s with the appropriate weapon at the right moment. Because the squads are diversified, your opponent won’t be able to intercept and concentrate down on the one critical weapon type with two squads. You did an excellent job.
The only item lacking from this list is a bodyguard for the character Volkite contemptor, but something has to give, and Lookout Sir spends the most of his time protecting the other Dreadnoughts.
Ironhands 2nd Place Winning List: Da Summer Waaagh
Be wary of compassion, since it is a sign of weakness.
For only one command point, exploding 6s to wound equals two wounds. There’s a lot of horde clearing in those vanguard troops with reroll all wounds on the lightning claws.
Summer Waaagh 2 Orks in 3rd place
Mani Cheema knows how to create a skew list like no one else. His list was previously featured when he won first place in the WC Open Summer Slaughter. Clearly, it’s still good. The effectiveness of Mars and the mortals kept him out of Round 3. Of course, the Cognis Lascannons’ constant damage means that every two rounds that get through will bust a buggy. It’s a good thing Mani brought 18 buggies with him. Unfortunately, since his buggies are not Objective Secured, those Objectives may be taken from underneath them. With four 100-point games under his belt, he rarely has a problem keeping objectives. 4-1 is still a fantastic performance, and well done, Mani.
